Abstract
The influence of the intermolecular interaction on the local electronic structure of liquid water was examined by the x-ray emission spectroscopy. A strong involvement of the a1-symmetry valence-orbital in the hydrogen bonding was observed, when x-ray emission spectra of the water molecule and liquid water was compared. The determination of the local electronic structure of water molecules, where one hydrogen bond was broken at the hydrogen site was done separately. The important potential of x-ray emission spectroscopy for elucidating basic features of liquids was illustrated.
