Abstract

A new technology, weld with trailing impact rolling (WTIR), is put forward to control the welding stress and distortion of the thin component with planar circumferential weld and to prevent welding hot cracking. The experimental results show that the surface of the WTIR is flat and smooth, and there is no hot cracking in the weld. The results also indicate that within a certain range of pressure, there is a definite relation between Y (maximum residual distortion of the weldment with planar circumferential weld) and P (pressure). Under a certain condition, the maximum value of Y of the WTIR weldment is less than 1/12 of that of ordinary weldment. The reason is that the circumferential compressive stress outside of the WTIR weld is less than the critical instability stress of the weldment. Simultaneously, WTIR reduces the distortion of the weldment aroused by the shrinkage of the weld bead.
