Abstract

In order to investigate the uplift mechanism and reasons of the large deformation for on elevated liquid-storage tank, this paper performs a seismic response analysis with ANSYS under horizontal and vertical loads by building the finite element model of a spherical elevated liquid-storage tank considering the fluid sloshing. The numerical results show that the tensile tank bottom trends to divorce from the foundation and the bottom of the tank uplifts locally due to the effect of lifting moment, thereby the crescent area is caused by the lift of tank bottom. In addition, the elephant foot bulging is in fact the buckling failure caused by the overcritical compression stress rather than the intensity failure.
