Abstract

Traffic safety is of upmost importance for road users and infrastructure providers. Safety is influenced significantly by the skid resistance of pavements. There are currently no standardized rules in place to ensure sufficiently skid resistant pavement designs for winter conditions. In the scope of this study the skid resistance levels are measured and analysed for various amounts of black ice. Ultimately the results are to be used for the prediction of skid resistance of road surface for winter conditions. Asphalt samples with different surface textures are analysed pertaining to their skid resistance under wet conditions (reference) as well as for varying levels of black ice. The results of a correlation analysis are used to determine prediction functions by means of a multiple regression analysis, exhibiting corrected degrees of determination R2 between 0.80 and 0.86. The reference skid resistance (under wet conditions) represents the most significant parameter for the prediction functions. The conducted laboratory investigations validate that the test rig according to Wehner/Schulze is well suited to evaluate the skid resistance under winter conditions in a modified testing setup.
