Abstract

Hollow fly ash particle is one of the coal combustion wastes and can be used to be incorporated into aluminum alloys to fabricate syntactic metallic foam composites. With the non-destructive X-ray microtomography technique, the three dimensional visualization of the fly ash/Al foam composite is obtained and accordingly many sectional views in orthogonal direction are extracted. The spatial distribution of hollow particles in the aluminum matrix is described by pair correlation function and nearest neighbor distance of the particle centers. On the basis of image analysis procedures, some other quantitative analysis results, including the size and content of the hollow particles, are also presented. These results provide a better understanding of the microstructural features for the foam composites.
