Abstract

The temperature field distribution on the surface of workpiece affects the material removal during electrical discharge machining (EDM). Thus, the mechanism of temperature field distribution in EDM process should be illustrated. In this study, the thermal model of EDM process was developed using ANSYS software. The effects of temperature field simulation on material removal in single pulse discharge and successive pulse discharge process were analyzed. Based on the simulation and the experimental results, it is demonstrated that the simulation results match the experimental ones well within the error of 15%. In addition, the interaction of temperature field and discharge crater between previous pulse discharge and subsequent pulse discharge was discussed in detail.
