Abstract

In this paper, the thermal properties of axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motors are investigated. An inner bulge structure on end caps combined with potting material is proposed to enhance the cooling effect for end windings. The cooling effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) thermal analysis. Furthermore, the influence of the thermal conductivity of potting material on cooling effect of the proposed cooling method is revealed.
