Abstract

A new carburizing theory resulting from the formation of Cottrell atmosphere composed of rare earth (RE) and carbon during RE carburizing was put forward based on the combination of the defect, diffusion, phase precipitation and refine/ultrafine theories with the recent achievements of solid state physics. The new theory of RE fast carburizing at pseudo duplex zone and the fining and ultra-fining technology of the microstructure in carburized surface layer is put forward for the first time.
