Abstract

Mounting viscous fluid dampers into structure to dissipate earthquake energy is an up-to-the-minute technology. As a kind of passive energy dissipation device, viscous fluid damper can provide bigger damping for structure; reduce the structural displacement and acceleration reaction significantly, improve the aseismic capability of the structure. Based on the constitutive model of Bingham fluid, the mechanics model of damping force for corresponding viscous damper were established. Based on the relationships of damping force and velocity, designed, optimized and selected every parameter of the viscous dampers, and arranged design cycle. A full-scale bi-directional cylinder-with-holes viscous fluid dampers was designed and manufactured and the performance of the damper were tested. The designed theory of damper was verified by analysis to the testing result.
