Abstract
A matrix for Ho 3+, Ho:YAlO 3 (Ho:YAP) was reported, which has obvious advantages compared with the traditional crystal, such as the Ho:YAG, Ho:YLF and Ho:GdVO 4. The Ho:YAP crystal had a broad absorption lines, large absorption cross, and a short growth cycle. The crystal is anisotropic, and the output power is not easy to be saturated. The possibility for the Ho:YAP crystal to be a matrix for 2 μm laser was demonstrated, and a continuous-wave (cw) high efficient Ho:YAlO 3 (Ho:YAP) laser pumped by a diode-pumped Tm:YLF laser at room-temperature was realized. The maximum output power reached 8.57W when the incident pump power was 15.6W. The slope efficiency was 63.7%, and power of the Tm:YLF laser to Ho:YAP optical conversion efficiency is 54.5%. The output wavelength of the Ho:YAP laser is 2 118nm with FWHM of about 0.8nm. The beam quality factor M 2 is 1.39.
