Abstract

This study investigated the effect of anions on the decolorization by potassium ferrate for the first time and systematic research was carried out to prove the effects of solution initial pH, temperature and degree of mineralization, which have engineering importance for practical application. The anions of Cl-, SO4 2-, NO3 - were favorable to color removal while CO3 2-, PO4 3- were adverse factors. Ferrate performed strong oxidizing ability during the reaction. It was independent of solution initial pH over wide range of 4.0 to 9.0 and kept over 85% decolorizing rate. Factor of temperature proved that even at 60oC, approximately 80% decolorizing efficiency was achieved. The decolorizing reaction was faster than mineralization, and ferrate only achieved 58.33% for COD removal and 24.15% for TOC removal.
