Abstract

This paper conducts a numerical investigation into the side hull layout optimization of a high-speed trimaran, employing viscous Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods to simulate its hydrodynamic performance under various arrangements. By varying the transverse and longitudinal positions of the side hulls, the effects on resistance and free surface characteristics are evaluated. Observation of the computational results and the corresponding wave characteristics reveals that positioning the side hull at the specific optimal location generates the most favorable wave interference between the main and side hulls, leading to a substantial reduction in resistance. This research elucidates the intrinsic mechanisms of wave interference in trimarans, the findings of which offer direct engineering guidance for the optimal arrangement and performance enhancement of high-speed trimaran side hulls.
