Abstract

Ca-alginate bead is a promising material for self-healing of cement-based materials. However, the influence of ca-alginate beads on the hydration and self-healing of cement is not clear. In this paper, the influence of ca-alginate beads on the formations of hydration and self-healing products of cement was studied. The types, contents, morphologies, and molecular structures of hydration and self-healing products promoted by ca-alginate beads were characterized by applying XRD, XEDS, TG, SEM, and FTIR techniques. The results show that the formation of the hydration and self-healing products are enhanced by ca-alginate beads due to the molecular structure of ca-alginate beads. Besides, the morphologies of the products in the cement matrix and on the surface of ca-alginate beads are different, which is caused by the formation of chemical bonds between the products on the surface of ca-alginate beads and ca-alginate beads.
