Abstract
Emerging contaminants (ECs), including pharmaceutical residues, endocrine disruptors, microplastics, and perfluoroalkyl substances, have garnered increasing attention as critical environmental challenges in recent years. Originating from industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities, these contaminants infiltrate aquatic ecosystems through wastewater discharge, surface runoff, and atmospheric deposition. This chapter critically examines the impacts of ECs on aquatic environments, highlighting their multifaceted effects. ECs disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic organisms, leading to reproductive disorders and exhibiting toxicity that compromises their overall health. Moreover, they are readily absorbed and bioaccumulated, triggering biomagnification and disrupting food web stability. At the ecosystem level, ECs undermine biodiversity, alter species composition, and reduce ecological resilience, thereby diminishing the ecosystem's ability to recover from disturbances. Additionally, these contaminants degrade water quality, hinder ecological restoration efforts, and facilitate the proliferation of drug-resistant bacteria. Addressing these issues requires a concerted global effort. Coordinated international actions, including the establishment of unified standards, effective discharge control measures, advancements in water treatment technologies, and robust monitoring systems, are essential. Public awareness and engagement must also be strengthened to safeguard water resources and ensure a sustainable future.
