Abstract

This study reports the effect of CeO2 on the erosion and abrasive wear properties of the HVOF thermal sprayed FeAl intermetallic coatings. It has been found that the FeAl intermetallic coatings containing CeO2 are featured with fewer cracks, less porosity, and higher hardness than the pure FeAl coatings. The FeAl intermetallic coatings containing CeO2 have exhibited significant increase in their resistances to erosion and abrasion compared with those of pure FeAl coatings. The possible mechanisms related to the improved microstructures, erosion and abrasive resistances of the FeAl intermetallic coatings containing CeO2 are also discussed.
