Abstract

In icy environment, the skid resistance of asphalt pavement was decreased significantly, thereby affecting traffic safety. However, the dynamic evolution process of the skid resistance mechanism of icy pavement is unclear. In viewing of this, the self-designed ice layer thickness sensor was used to evaluate ice layer thickness accurately in this paper. On this basis, the effect of environmental temperature, ice thickness and test speed on the skid resistance of asphalt mixture was analyzed by dynamic friction tester. Subsequently, the effective forward power index and critical ice layer thickness were proposed to reveal the evolution rule of skid resistance for icy pavement. It was found that the self-designed ice layer thickness sensor enabled to measure the ice layer thickness. The effective forward power index enabled to distinguish the different contact state of rubber and icy asphalt pavement. The three friction stages of rubber and icy pavement namely rubber-pavement friction, rubber-ice-pavement friction, and rubber-ice friction corresponded to effective forward power index >60 kW/N, 60 kW/N > effective forward power index >20 kW/N and effective forward power index <20 kW/N respectively. The average attenuation rate of the skid resistance due to temperature, ice layer thickness and speed were 39.05%, 53.06% and 12.04% respectively. Under the coupling effect of above three factors, the attenuation rate of skid resistance of icy pavement was reached 85%.
