Synthesis of Fe-Cr-Mo-C-B amorphous coating with high corrosion resistance

Abstract

Fe-based metallic glasses usually possess ultrahigh hardness, elastic modulus/limit and wear/corrosion resistance. In the present investigation, atmospheric plasma spray was used to deposit Fe-based metallic coatings onto 921A navy steel and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates. The microstructure and corrosion properties of the Fe-based metallic coatings were studied. It was found that the obtained Fe-based coating with about 300 μm in thickness showed fully amorphous state and possessed low porosity. Moreover, the Fe-based coating exhibited better corrosion resistance than 921A navy steel and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in aggressive H2SO4 solutions. This amorphous metallic coating could be applied as an excellent alternative material in corrosion environments.
