Abstract

The microstructure of 2Crl3 steel samples after gas nitriding was analyzed with optical microscopy, SEM, XRD and microhardness tester. Wear behavior of the gas nitrided 2Crl3 steel disk against unitrided 2Crl3 pins was investigated using a pin-on-disk type tribometer. The results show that gas nitriding at 520 °C for 20 h can obtain the nitrided depth of 2Crl3 steel up to 165 μ.m. The microhardness of samples after nitriding increased by 2. 5 times compared with unitrided samples. The wear resistance of samples are increased significantly after nitriding. It is observed that there are no cracks appearing on the worn surfaces of nitrided 2Crl3 disks while severe cracks are appearing on the worn surfaces of unitrided 2Crl3 pins.
