Abstract
The high efficient, energy-saving and environment-friendly technology of simultaneous γ-ray radiation grafting was used to improve the surface property of carbon fibers (CF) which were treated in epoxy/acetone solutions of different concentrations. The CF samples treated were irradiated by 60Co γ-rays to 300 kGy at a dose rate of 4.8kGy/h. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement revealed an obvious morphology change in the surface of grafted CF. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the O/C ratio and quantity of oxygen functional groups were enhanced efficiently by the radiation graft epoxy. The wettability test indicated that the surface energy of CF was improved. The inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) testing showed that the ILSS of the composites reinforced by grafted CF increased approximately by 18.3%.
