Abstract

A steady air-suction method was proposed based on the wind flow control around the long-span bridge deck section to improve the aerodynamic characteristics of the bridge section and the flutter stability of the bridge. The Humen bridge in China was adopted as the research object. The wind field around the bridge section under the interaction of the wind inflow and the steady air-suction on the bridge deck undersurface was simulated using the numerical method based on the computational fluid dynamics. The flutter stability of the bridge under the action of steady air-suction was analyzed applying the Scanlan flutter analysis method. The computational results indicate that the air suction makes the main streamlines close to the section surface and reduces the aerodynamic torque under the torsional movement of the bridge section model. The flutter stability of the long-span bridge is enhanced by the steady air-suction.
