Abstract

Modification of polypropylene (PP) was performed by blending different mass fraction of syndiotactic 1, 2-polybutadiene (sPB) thermoplastic elastomer, respectively. The physical and mechanical properties of the blend system were studied. The similarity in structure of PP and sPB endowed their blend with a superior compatibility. As the mass fraction of sPB increased in the range of 0-40%, the blend's yield strength in tension, elastic modulus in bending and heat resistance lowered somewhat, whereas its impact strength rose, especially the cantilever impact strength at ambient temperature increased in a larger magnitude. However, its impact strength at low temperature augmented a little. The elongation at break and melt flow rate of the blend went up initially and went down subsequently.
