Study on ionospheric clutter mitigation in high frequency surface wave radar

Abstract

The paper analyzes the characteristics of ionospheric clutter, which has proven to be the greatest impediment in high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR). Ionospheric clutter influences most range bins, all Doppler bins and beams. A novel ionospheric clutter mitigation algorithm for high frequency surface wave radar is introduced. The past CPI data was used firstly to form the auxiliary channel to cancel the directly reflect component of ionospheric clutter, adaptive beamforming was used to suppress the mix path component of ionospheric clutter secondly. A synthesis of the two cancellation process was carried on by knowledge-aided pre-whiten method. Experimental results of experimental high frequency surface wave radar show that the proposed method i is very effective and flexible.
