Study on flow cessation mechanism of Zn-4Al liquid metal in microscale

Abstract

The filling ability of micro-castings was determined by cessation mechanism of liquid metal in the microscale space, so the study on flow cessation mechanism has important guiding significance for improving the micro precision casting technology. The cessation mechanism of Zn-4Al liquid metal in the microscale space was investigated by observing the solidification structure of alloys formed in the micro-channel with different diameter. The results show that the cessation mechanism changed from the front blocking mechanism in macroscopic scale to the front blocking mechanism combined with the semi-solid blocking mechanism in microscale, and the critical size of transition is 500 μm in diameter. The reason causes the fundamental change in cessation mechanism is the special solidification process of the alloy in the condition of microscale.
