Study of magnetoelastic behavior of Terfenol-D under low frequency and low strength magnetic fields for alternating magnetic field measurements

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Terfenol-D is a magnetostrictive material well known for its large magnetostriction and high magnetic flux density which makes it suitable for a wide range of sensing and actuation applications. This paper is based on experimental study performed to analyze the magnetoelastic vibrations produced within Terfenol-D when exposed to low strength time varying magnetic fields ranging between 60 Hz and 1 KHz. The vibrations produced within Terfenol D due to time varying magnetic fields were observed using a high-speed laser vibrometer. The results obtained demonstrate excellent response of Terfenol-D and validate its feasibility for using this material in magnetoelastic devices for low frequency and low strength time varying magnetic fields measurements associated with various engineering and scientific applications.
