Abstract
The surface microstructure of 4Cr5MoV1Si steel treated by means of carbon-dioxide laser rapid melt-coagulating was studied. The melt-coagulated region consists of fine extensional growing cellular crystals and cellular dendrite crystals. The distribution of alloying elements in this region is homogeneous, and all carbides are melted with the elimination of inclusions. The surface microstructure of the melt-coagulated region is a martensite structure with larger amount of lath martensites than that in the steel usually quenched. The laser rapid melt-coagulating is an effective way to improve the strength and the life-time of the working surface of a mould in heat condition.
