Abstract

To achieve the application of STandardized for the Exchange of Product model data-Numerical Control (STEP-NC) in conventional Numerical Control (NC) machine tool, the toolpath planning method based on STEP-NC was proposed. Firstly, types of STEP-NC controllers and its three most important function modules were summarized. Then, the coordinate system transformation in the process of toolpath planning was analyzed, while the method and the procedure of machining feature toolpath planning using STEP-NC entity-index map were also presented. Machining strategies of the two machining features of both planar-face, and pocket were analyzed in particular. Furthermore, the concrete flow charts of the two machining features toolpath planning based on STEP-NC entity-index map were described. Finally, in a STEP-NC program example based on the three machining features of planar-face, hole, and pocket, the G-code program planned by STEP-NC controller was machined in the three-dimensional milling machine equipped with open Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system HITCNC. Experiment results demonstrated that the proposed toolpath planning method based on STEP-NC was feasible and could be applied in larger scale.
