Abstract
A zirconium diboride (ZrB2) based composite with silicon carbide platelet (SiCpl) of 15% in volume was prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1600°C for 5 min with pressure and heating rate of 30 MPa and 100°C/min, respectively. The densification behavior during sintering, mechanical properties and microstructure of the composites were investigated. Influence of preferred orientation of SiCpl on the mechanical properties of the ZrB2-SiCpl composite ceramic was discussed. Results show that the SPS can decrease the sintering temperature of ZrB2 ceramic. Microstructure of the composite with homogeneous and small grains could be obtained, indicating that the rapid sintering can inhibit the abnormal growth of ZrB2 grains. The directional alignment of SiCpl favors the increase of sintering and mechanical properties.
