Abstract

A novel side-excitation fiber-optic laser-ultrasound transducer based on fused taper fiber is proposed and demonstrated. The transducer achieves ultrasound generation at optical fiber sidewall and performs a relative high conversion efficiency. In the experiments, 514 mV peak- to-peak power ultrasound wave has been obtained at the fiber sidewall with input 0.04 mJ laser pulse. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the strength of generated ultrasound wave can be controlled by adjusting the taper length of the fused fiber taper. The proposed method is promising candidate to achieve the multi-point laser-ultrasonic generation along a fiber.
