Shape memory polymers composites and their applications in deployable structures

Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

Abstract

This paper reviews shape memory polymers (SMPs), their composites and the applications in deployable structures. SMPs are a kind of stimulus responsive material, which have a good capability to show a high reversible strain upon external stimulus and can be used in deformable structures. We first introduce the foundations of SMPs, and then present the recent advances in particles, chopped fibers and contentious fibers filled SMP composites, where their electroactive properties are emphasized. Subsequently, the applications of SMP composites in deployable structures are discussed in detail, including deployable hinges, trusses and antennas.
