Abstract

Whispering-gallery mode resonators with ultra-high-Q factors have the capability to enhance nonlinear light-matter interaction via long photon lifetime confinement and small mode volumes. Optical crystals as hosts for such cavities can greatly improve the Q factors owing to ultrahigh material purities. Moreover, versatile crystals can bring additional functionalities for whispering-gallery mode resonator applications, especially in the area of nonlinear photonics. In this chapter, we review recent research on second-order nonlinear effects and nonlinear photon scattering with mechanically polished ultra-high-Q crystalline whispering-gallery mode resonators.
