N2 - Talkative power converter (TPC), which embeds signals into switching ripple, achieving the power line communication (PLC) and consequently enabling the power to communicate, has been proposed recently to significantly enhance the coordination control capability of power converter-interfaced resources. Since the talkative power (TP) is an emerging technique and a special PLC, a comprehensive overview of the advanced PLC techniques and the application scenarios of talkative-power-based PLC (TP-PLC) is missing in current literature. Hence, in this paper, a review of switching-ripple-based PLC (SR-PLC) techniques is detailed, to summarize their advances and performances in terms of the SR-PLC principles, SR-PLC in non-isolated converter and isolated converter, as well as the applications in visible light communication, battery management system, switching reluctance generator/motor and wireless electric vehicle charging stations. Finally, the trending topics of TP-PLC are discussed.
