Restoration of fatigue damage in steel tube by eddy current treatment

Abstract

In this study, the ECT (eddy current treatment) was applied to 1045 steel tubular specimen, and the propagation of fatigue cracks within tubular specimens was delayed evidently at different fatigue stages. The delay could be ascribed to the restoration of the fatigue damage. The Finite Element simulation results indicate that the thermal effect in vicinity of fatigue crack tip could be responsible for the healing of fatigue crack. The thermal stress was mainly caused by the detour of eddy current in the vicinity of fatigue crack tips, which was influenced by the crack orientation and eddy current direction.
