Abstract

An experiment instrument of external pressure forming (EPF) is designed and manufactured to realize the high pressure sealing on the outside of tube blank and assembly and disassembly of the mandrel in the tube blank. Tube blanks of low carbon steel are applied to carry out EPF experiments of a thinwalled hollow spline part. The hydrostatic pressure is built through hydro media surrounding the tube and compresses the cross-section of the tube blank onto the mandrel to form the hollow spline part. The results indicate that the pressure required for the EPF is relatively low and the thickness distribution is uniform. Especially, the inner contour of the formed part is in agreement with the outer contour of the mandrel generally. The randomicity of the tube instability at different key-way has a little effect on the thickness distribution of the formed part.
