Abstract

Highway tunnels are mostly paved with asphalt concrete pavement. One of the components, asphalt is inflammable. And once it is ignited, large quantities of heat, smoke and poisonous gas are released and spread quickly, in tunnel fire, which will cause the difficulties of the escape and rescue seriously. This paper presents research on mineral-inorganic flame-retardant used in asphalt concrete pavement to avoid the huge damage caused by tunnel fires. The mechanism of flame retardancy was investigated systematically based on plenty of tests. Results indicated that the flame-retardant technique can slow the fire spreading and prolong the time of escape and rescue.
