Abstract

This paper analyzes the oscillation mechanism of electrical discharge machining (EDM) discharge plasma in three respects. The conclusion has been drawn that the oscillation of EDM discharge plasma is a complex process acted by many factors such as electric field of gap, magnetic field of gap, conductivity of plasma channel, pressure of dielectric and geometry of gap. The analysis of oscillation mechanism combined with the analysis of powder-mixed EDM and ultrasonic EDM from a new angle educe an idea that enhancing the oscillation of EDM plasma might improve the machining efficiency. Based on this idea, a new method, machining with active oscillation pulses, is presented to enhance the oscillation of EDM plasma. Contrastive machining experiment with conventional EDM pulsed power supply shows that active oscillation pulses are able to improve the machining efficiency of EDM by enhancing the oscillation of EDM plasma and increasing the rate of normal discharge.
