Porous titanium by fiber sintering and its biomimetic Ca-P coating

Abstract

A porous titanium was produced by titanium fibers sintering and a pre-calcium phosphate coating on the porous titanium surface was prepared by mixed-alkali and heat treatment followed by immersing into a supersaturated calcium phosphate solution (SCPS). The compressive properties of porous titanium were tested. The morphology, element content and phase composition of the coating were also analyzed. It is found that the porous titanium was in an open-cell microstructure with a porosity of 29%-84% and a pore size of 100-800 μm. The compressive yield strength of the porous titanium was 150-230 MPa and the compressive elastic modulus was 4.0-4.5 GPa at a porosity of 55%-60%, close to that of the natural bone. After immersion into the SBF solution for 3 days, a bone-like apatite was detected by XRD on the cell surface of the porous titanium pretreated in supersaturated calcium phosphate solution for 24 hours, showing a good compatibility of the porous titanium with bone.
