N2 - Concentration levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in topsoils collected in Harbin, China were presented. Total concentrations of 16 PAHs and 18 PCBs ranged from 17 to 3,260 ng g-1 dry weight and 0.025 to 1.795 ng g-1, respectively. Large differences of concentration levels were found from urban, suburban, and background/rural sites. PAH profiles were similar, with higher percentages of high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs. Composition of PCB homologues showed high percentage of HMW PCBs, in which Tetra-CBs, Penta-CBs and Hexa-CBs were abundant. A strong correlation was found between concentrations of PAHs and PCBs and total organic carbon contents of soil samples. PCB concentrations are higher in industrialized area than those at other sites, with a ratio of up two orders of magnitude, indicating potential sources of PCBs. Pyrogenic origins, such as coal and fuel combustion from domestic heating and traffic exhausts, were dominant PAH sources in Harbin.
