Abstract

Measurements of resonance inelastic X-ray scattering photons can provide near edge X-ray absorption spectra at ultra-high resolution. We derive the explicit polarization dependence for such measurements and show that it can be used as a crucial tool for symmetry assignments of bound core-excited states.
