Abstract

A ceramic coating was prepared in phosphate electrolyte by plasma electrolytic oxidation. The composition, structure, and mechanical as well as tribological properties of the coating were studied by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), hardness tester and ball-on-disc friction test. It is found that the coating is mainly composed of MgO, with some P element permeating into the coating. Furthermore, the microhardness of the ceramic coating and the friction coefficient of magnesium alloy coated with ceramic coating were well improved.
