abstract = "One dimensional (ID) single-layer and bimorph photostrictive actuators have been used in non-contact vibration control of flexible structures. These two types of photostrictive actuators showed control deficiencies in two-dimensional (2D) plate and shell structures. In this paper, a new multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) photostrictive actuator configuration is introduced. Including the photodeformation induced forces and moments, the governing equation of a plate laminate with the new multi-DOF actuator is derived. The control effects of the square and rectangular plates with the new multi-DOF actuator and a single one-piece uni-axial actuator are evaluated. Studies suggest that the new multi-DOF actuator can control more natural modes of rectangular plates, as compared with the one-piece monoaxial actuator. However, multi-DOF actuator shows no control advantage in square plates (i.e., symmetrical structures). The control actions of the plate with various sizes of the new multi-DOF actuator are studied and analyzed. Analysis results reveal that increasing actuator size only enhances the control effects of specific plate modes and is ineffective to other modes. The optimal actuator size leading to the best control effect can be inferred from the modal actuation plots.",
