Abstract
Solar thermal propulsion (STP) is a novel space propulsion system. The characteristics of direct STP, indirect STP and post-combustion STP are presented. Their propulsive performances are calculated by employing high temperature solar thermal convection theory respectively. Effects of solar concentrator radius and propellant kinds are discussed. The calculation results demonstrate that taking hydrogen as propellant. The direct STP with 4 m mirror radius provides thrust of 10 N at specific impulse of 800 s. The propulsive performance of post-combustion STP within the hydrogen excess coefficient ranges of 2-5 is appropriate.
