Abstract

The mechanical performance of a heavy-duty cast steel universal hinged support capable of withstanding 4500 kN of tension, 3500 kN of shear or 6500 kN of compression was investigated under three load conditions. These were critical tension, critical compression and critical shear respectively. This innovative loading and self-balanced transmitting system was designed and fabricated by updating the available loading ring in a lab. Full-scale experiments in all three load cases were carried out successfully. Tests results showed the support has reasonable design and manufacturing details, a direct force path, reliable performance, and the support as designed satisfies the requirements of the Chinese code. The three tests also verified the theoretical model of the finite element analysis, further confirming the applicability of the model.
