Abstract

The probability that the peak responses of MDOF systems exceed the response estimated by using CQC rule with the peak modal responses from the response spectra with equal probability of exceedance is assessed. In the assessment, the uncertainty in the seismic excitation due to all potential earthquakes is considered by the power spectra density function of the ground acceleration with uncertain parameters. The numerical results show that using CQC rule may lead the conservative or unconservative peak responses of MDOF systems. The severe under- or over-estimation could result when each of modal contributions is equally significant of the absolute sum of the effective modal peak response.
