Abstract

Synchronization of power systems is not only a vital issue nowadays, but also of major importance in the development of future smart grids where high penetration of renewable sources is integrated. The Kuramoto model, as one of the most successful mathematical model describing the synchronization phenomena, has been extended to help solve synchronization issues in power system analysis with further potential. This paper intends to summarize recent works connecting the Kuramoto model and power system analysis in both a theoretical and an application point of view, which would provide valuable information for future research. We will begin with a summary about the developments of the Kuramoto model for power grid analysis. Then, the applicability of the Kuramoto model into the power system analysis is further illustrated in great details. Following this, specific applications of the Kuramoto model in power grid analysis is overviewed.
