Abstract

TiB2-Cu Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) were fabricated by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis with Pseudo Hot Isostatic Pressing (SHS-PHIP). The preformings are laid layer-by-layer with raw powder. Because of the PHIP, namely products being extruded when they are red-hot and plastic, the final distribution was greatly different from the optimized design. The PHIP caused the flow of metal and aggregation of ceramic particles. Through studying the flow and aggregation between two layers, the Mass Transformation Model (MTM) was founded, and this model agree with the experiment well when the metal content is 20wt%-50wt%. By use of this model, the processing parameters can be optimized to control the flow of metal and distribution of ceramic particles, namely, to optimize the structures.
