Abstract
The authors report the demonstration of optical tristability, an optical XOR gate, and an optical R-S flip-flop by using a pair of optically bistable LED circuits connected electrically in parallel. The configuration of the devices are described. Because they can be operated at low-optical-power levels over a very broad range of wavelengths and can be monolithically integrated, the devices may be used in noncoherent optical communication.
