Ontology-Based Architecture Model for Autonomous Transportation Systems

Abstract

With the continuous research on intelligent transportation systems, studies on autonomous transportation systems (ATS), as a new generation of transportation systems, have been paid more and more attention. Among them, the architecture of ATS is the most important fundamental to be researched. This paper proposes a new architecture of ATS to satisfy the requirements of research, which is based on five basic transportation elements: technology, requirements, services, functions, and components. Focusing on the limitations of information expression and sharing in most traditional transportation system models, the model construction method is researched on the combination of the five basic elements and ontology theories on autonomous transportation systems. Based on these research, an ontology model of ATS is designed and constructed, providing a general framework of basic concepts and relationships to handle the complicated and multi-source information expressed or shared in the autonomous transportation system. At last, taking the scene of autonomous vehicle safety systems as an example, this research analyzes the five types of transportation elements through the analysis of the relationship between this system's functions, and the reasonableness and effectiveness of the ontology model of ATS are proved by deploying it into this scene.
