Numerical typhoon simulation for engineering application in offshore regions

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

With the development of society and economy, more and more tall buildings, tower structures, long-span spatial structures and long-span bridges, which are very sensitive to the wind effects, have been built in these years in the southeast coastal China, the most typhoon vulnerable region of the country. It's necessary for structure engineers to understand of the effect of typhoon upon the coastal wind environment, and then make reasonable predictions of maximum wind speeds caused by typhoons in the design lifetime of structures for purpose of safety and risk evaluation of these structures. In the paper the typhoon field model proposed by the group of US Army Corps of Engineers (CE model) is introduced in detail, and the solution scheme by difference method is given. According to the typhoon parameters given in Typhoon Annals, the typhoon wind speed and direction vs. time histories are simulated, and the wind field is produced by wind speed contour. Comparisons are made between the observed wind speeds and the simulated results from both CE typhoon model and Shapiro typhoon model.
