N2 - The trans-media aircraft uses cavitation to reduce its frictional drag enabling high-speed navigation in water. However, the interaction between the aircraft and the cavitation can generate a planing force that induces oscillations and destabilizes the aircraft. The highly nonlinear and discontinuous characteristics of the force lead to great challenges in the design of the controller. Therefore, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme considering planing avoidance is proposed for lateral dynamics model of trans-media aircraft in this paper. The planing avoidance problem is transformed into a state constraint problem in NMPC, and the planing force avoidance rule of trans-media aircraft is realized by adjusting the weight value in the cost function. A trans-media aircraft equipped with gimbaled nozzles and a cavitator is selected as the test platform. Two scenarios including sinusoidal and step reference tracking signals are simulated, respectively. The results validate that the NMPC controller has satisfactory tracking performance, and the average control performance can be improved by at least 38%, while avoiding the generation of planing force.
