Abstract

Conventional revolute joints are widely used in deployable structures. But the clearances of revolute joints often affect the dynamic behaviour of deployable structures. So it is important to analyze joint stiffness. Different load path through them can cause unequal tension and compression stiffness. The Hertz Theory is based on the assumption of non-conforming contact. The problem of comforting contact is constrained by this assumption. In this paper, the new contact model for revolute joint is expressed to solve this problem. For validating the stiffness model, the finite element model of joint is established. By comparing of those three models, the precision of the new model can be validated. So the new model is suitable for calculating the revolute joint contact stiffness in the case of small clearance. When the clearance is very large, the error of new model result is close to the error of Hertz result.
